How Tradelines Affect Average Age of Accounts

Average age of accounts is one reason people shop aged tradelines, but the internet often turns a nuanced factor into a simple promise: “Add a 15-year card and your credit age becomes 15 years.” That is not how to think about it.

An older AU account can appear with an original opening date, but the exact way a scoring model treats authorized-user age can vary.

What average age means

At a basic level, average age looks at the ages of accounts in a file and averages them. The oldest account, newest account and overall depth can also matter separately depending on the model.

How an older AU account can change the visible file

If a young report suddenly includes an authorized-user card opened years earlier, the report can show substantially more history. That may be relevant to scoring and can make the file look deeper, but the responsibility type remains authorized user.

Why the model matters

FICO has indicated that newer versions can treat AU accounts differently from primary accounts. The safest assumption is not that every year of AU age receives full weight in every score.

When age is worth focusing on

  • Your primary accounts are all recent.

  • You have a very thin file.

  • Utilization is already controlled.

  • There are no more urgent derogatory or payment-history issues.

  • The older AU account can report before your target date.

When age is a distraction

If you are carrying 95% utilization or have a brand-new collection, paying a large premium for an extremely old tradeline may not address the most important problem. Credit strategy works best when priorities are ranked.

A quick reality check

Tradelines are one part of a credit profile, not a guaranteed score increase or approval shortcut. Results depend on what actually reports, the rest of the credit file, the scoring model used and the lender reviewing the application. Primary accounts, low balances and on-time payments still matter.
