Aged Tradelines Explained: Why Account Age Matters

2 min read

An aged tradeline is simply a credit account that has been open for a meaningful amount of time. In the authorized user market, “aged tradeline” usually means an older credit-card account where a buyer is added as an AU.

The attraction is obvious: length of credit history is part of many scoring models, and a young file can look very different from a file with older established accounts. But age is only useful when it addresses a real weakness.

Why account age matters

Credit reports show when accounts were opened, and length of credit history can be a scoring factor. Older, well-managed accounts can be a sign of stability. A file made up entirely of accounts opened in the last six months is different from one with years of history.

Does an AU tradeline inherit the original opening date?

Many authorized user accounts are reported with the original account opening date, but issuer practices can vary. Even when that date appears on the report, the scoring model and lender may not treat AU age exactly like primary account age.

That is why buying purely based on the oldest date in a marketplace is not a complete strategy.

When paying more for age may make sense

  • Your own revolving accounts are very young.

  • Your file has little depth and few established accounts.

  • The older account also has clean history and low reported utilization.

  • The account is expected to report before your target date.

When age is probably not the priority

  • Your utilization is extremely high.

  • You have recent serious derogatory items.

  • You already have several old primary accounts.

  • You are paying a large premium for age that does not change your actual profile weakness.

Age versus limit

A common buying mistake is assuming the oldest account is always best. If somebody has a mature file but 90% revolving utilization, a younger low-balance high-limit account may be mathematically more relevant than paying extra for 15 years of age.

A quick reality check

Tradelines are one part of a credit profile, not a guaranteed score increase or approval shortcut. Results depend on what actually reports, the rest of the credit file, the scoring model used and the lender reviewing the application. Primary accounts, low balances and on-time payments still matter.
