Credit Piggybacking Explained: How Authorized User Credit Really Works

Sep 28
2 min read

Credit piggybacking is the informal name for benefiting from another person’s credit-card history by becoming an authorized user on the account. Families have done this for years—for example, a parent adding a teenager or spouse to an established card.

Commercial tradelines use the same authorized-user mechanism but turn the placement into a paid service.

How it works

The primary cardholder asks the issuer to add another person as an authorized user. If the issuer furnishes AU data, the account can appear on the authorized user’s credit report with information from the underlying card.

What the authorized user is responsible for

An authorized user generally is not legally responsible for repaying the account simply because they were added. The primary holder remains responsible for charges under the card agreement.

Why piggybacking can affect credit

Credit scores are calculated from data on credit reports. If an AU account appears with positive history, low utilization and established age, that data can become part of the file and may affect scoring. Negative AU history can hurt too.

Why scoring models treat it carefully

Because authorized users are not the primary borrowers, modern scoring models and lenders have reasons to distinguish AU data from primary repayment history. FICO has said newer versions give AU accounts less impact than primary accounts in some respects.

Family AU versus paid tradeline

The credit-report mechanism is similar, but the relationship is different. A family AU may stay on an account for years and actually use the card. A paid tradeline is usually a temporary placement designed to add account data for a defined period.

A quick reality check

Tradelines are one part of a credit profile, not a guaranteed score increase or approval shortcut. Results depend on what actually reports, the rest of the credit file, the scoring model used and the lender reviewing the application. Primary accounts, low balances and on-time payments still matter.
