Tradelines vs. Credit Repair: They’re Not the Same Thing
Tradelines and credit repair get lumped together because both are discussed by people trying to improve credit. They are not the same service and they do not solve the same problem.
A tradeline adds account information. Credit-report correction or dispute work challenges information that is inaccurate, incomplete or otherwise reported incorrectly. Those are two different jobs.
What a tradeline does
An authorized user tradeline may add an existing credit-card account to the AU’s report, including reported history, limit, balance and opening date. It does not alter the records of unrelated creditors.
What legitimate dispute work does
The legitimate part of credit-report correction is identifying factual errors, communicating with furnishers or bureaus, and requesting investigation or correction where the law gives the consumer that right. It is not inventing identity theft or disputing accurate information simply because it is negative.
Why people confuse the two
A positive tradeline can improve the overall look of a file even while negatives remain. That can feel like the file was “repaired,” but the actual negative items may be untouched.
Which one should come first?
Inaccurate negative item: address the accuracy issue directly.
Very high utilization: consider paydown or utilization planning.
Clean but thin file: a tradeline may be more relevant.
No primary credit: start building accounts in your own name.
Mixed problems: rank them instead of buying every available solution.

A quick reality check
Tradelines are one part of a credit profile, not a guaranteed score increase or approval shortcut. Results depend on what actually reports, the rest of the credit file, the scoring model used and the lender reviewing the application. Primary accounts, low balances and on-time payments still matter.
