What Happens When an Authorized User Tradeline Is Removed?

When an authorized user tradeline is removed, you are losing whatever information that account was contributing to the profile. That can include reported limit, balance, age and payment history.
Whether a score changes—and by how much—depends on whether the account was helping, hurting or barely being counted in the first place.
The account may disappear from the report
After the issuer processes the removal and updates the bureaus, the AU account may stop reporting and can disappear from the authorized user’s credit file. The timing is not always immediate.
Aggregate utilization math can change
If the AU account had a large limit and low balance and that limit was being counted, removing it can reduce total available revolving credit and cause aggregate utilization to rise mathematically.
Example: $3,000 in balances over $20,000 in total limits is 15%. Remove a $10,000 AU line and the same $3,000 over $10,000 becomes 30%. That is math, not a guaranteed scoring outcome.
Visible account age and depth can change
If the AU account was one of the oldest accounts on the report, removal can change the visible age profile. How a particular scoring model treats AU age is another question, so do not assume the score will move in lockstep with the displayed date.
Removal can also help
If the AU account is heavily utilized, delinquent or otherwise negative, removal may be beneficial. Being an authorized user does not make bad information harmless. A poorly managed primary holder can turn an AU account from support into a liability.
Plan for the temporary nature of AU history
Use temporary AU support while building primary accounts, lowering your own balances and developing a credit profile that remains strong after the AU account is gone.

A quick reality check
Tradelines are one part of a credit profile, not a guaranteed score increase or approval shortcut. Results depend on what actually reports, the rest of the credit file, the scoring model used and the lender reviewing the application. Primary accounts, low balances and on-time payments still matter.
